Canada’s economy faces three challenges — recovering forward from the COVID-19 pandemic, decarbonizing our economy, and addressing inequality to ensure a prosperous future for all. Fossil fuel industry workers know such fuels have contributed significantly to our lives and economy. We also know it’s time to forge a sustainable energy future. And we have the skills needed to build the new, net-zero economy and kickstart Canada’s recovery from the pandemic.

The Renewable Skills Initiative will rapidly upskill fossil fuel industry and Indigenous workers into emerging solar and wind energy careers. In Phase 1, ten fossil fuel industry workers and five Louis Bull Tribe community members were trained in solar through the installation of an 8kW solar energy system on the roof of the community daycare. The goal of Phase 2 isto bring similar training programs to over 70 communities and 1,000 workers across Canada by 2026.

During Phase 2 we will develop five customized sustainable energy programs, test these newly designed programs out for the first time, build capacity to scale training delivery, and iterate the programs. Upon program graduation, trainees will be able to participate in sustainable energy project design, installation and maintenance. Phase 2 will also ensure these trainees are supported over six months to find such job opportunities.
